Please Note! DOS doesn't have to be hard. It just looks hard and useless. The learning curve isn't that high. You could even have a list on a piece of paper of the most common DOS Commands to refer to. Contrary to popular belief, DOS isn't obsolete. Its a good diagnostic tool to solve some problems with the typical Windows crap that we all hate. Give it a shot and you will see that you actually do have control of your PC.

Useing DOS commands

DOS usually starts you in the wrong folder location. In "XP" (C:\Documents and settings\User Name Here\>)
You must change the starting point to C:\ by using the "change directory" key (cd)
and then \. Example, "cd\". This will start you in the right place. (C:\) cd "change Directory" "cd\"changes the directory to C drive.
At the C drive prompt "C:\"type in the following commands as needed.

DIR "Lists all the files on C Drive
DIR C:\*.exe. "Lists all the files on C with ".exe" Also try ".bat"".lnk" ".txt"
REN C:\goofy.txt pluto.txt (Changes the name of 'GOOFY.TXT' to 'PLUTO.TXT'.)

COPY C:\file location folder\file name and
extension(space)"Destination drive or folder"Copies file or folder.

MOVE C:\file location folder\file name and
extension(space)"Destination drive or folder" moves the file.

DEL C:\file location folder\file name and
extension"Deletes the file or.

DIR C:\file location folder\Shows you what's in the folder.

RD C:\folder address\name of folder /s /q(removes folder) (/s /q deletes subfolders and files along with it.)

DOS Rules

1.  When the folder names in the address of folders are 8 characters or less, type full folder name. But when it's
9 or longer, type the first 6 in upper case
followed by "~1"ex- "domume~1"(documents and settings)
until the target folder last in the line, then type that folders full name

2.  Use the "up" arrow key to repeat typed line so all you have to do is make small changes.
Tap it more than once and stop on desired line.

3.  Right click the DOS icon in far upper left corner of DOS window to the left of
the "Command Prompt" and choose " PROPERTIES to setup the DOS window. you can change colors of
background and text as well as text size.

4.  Remember, Bah files are NOT writen in DOS. Rule #1 doesnt apply.
DOS codes work in a bah file but the folder addresses are all spelled out properly.
